Intellectual & Dev Disabilities T4T for Entry Level Aca
General Description
8:00am - 12:00pm
This program provides police with scenario-based instruction with practical application in the field, to be able to identify procedures that an officer should/may employ when encountering an individual with I/DD (intellectual/developmental disabilities [I/DD]). Since 2015, I/DD training has been required in all MD LE academy programs. Due to the importance of training for all officers, the PTC has now mandated that all LE who did not receive I/DD training during their academy program receive such training prior to December 31, 2017.
In response to the adoption of objective 9.14-9.19 by the Police Training Commission, Responding to People with Intellectual and Developmental (I/DD) Disabilities is being offered as a training for trainers program. This 8-hour program will address the procedures an officer should employ when encountering an individual with I/DD, identify the indicators that a person may have an I/DD, identify procedures an officer should utilize to ensure the safety of an individual who has an I/DD, demonstrate communication techniques to effectively interact with people with I/DD, explain the resources available to assist a person I/DD, and describe the procedures an officer should use to ensure compliance with ADA.
