Co-sponsored by the Maryland Community Crime Prevention Institute, the Southern Maryland Junior Police Academy is a condensed version of the six month police academy. Participants are high school criminal justice students. The program consists of classroom instruction, guest speakers, and hands-on demonstrations. Students learn handcuffing techniques, arrest procedures, traffic stops, etc. They also have demos by K-9, SWAT, and emergency helicopter. Presentations on Personal Safety, McGruff, and the Dangers of Facebooking, Sexing, etc. are included. The Academy ends with a graduation ceremony for the students.
