This three day class, facilitated by Detective Gary Childs, a homicide investigator with more than 20 years combined experience with the Baltimore City Police Department and the Baltimore County Police Department, will present an overview and classroom discussion of the five types of death investigations [natural, accidental, suicide, homicide and could not be determined]; the role of the investigator including response to the call and identifying and controlling single and multiple crime scenes; the use of investigative tools [cell phones, videos, blood spatter, social media and interviews and interrogation]; unexplained deaths [suicide, infant deaths]. The class will include detailed examination and discussion of several case studies involving actual homicide investigations. This course can be beneficial both for newly assigned criminal investigators who have a limited background in conducting death investigations and for experienced investigators willing to share their experience with other investigators and desiring to enhance their investigative skills.
