Cell Phone Tracking

General Description
8:30am - 12:30pm

Students will learn of the great value cell phones have in criminal investigations. Course begins with a legal briefing on how to obtain cell phone information, search warrant language, and current case law. Next the students will learn the basics of cell phone operation, the data contained on cell phones, how to access that data, as well as properly preserve it. Finally the students will be briefed on the services available from the FBI’s Cellular Analysis Survey Team (CAST). Formed in 2010, CAST exploits cell phone histories and cell tower information for every major cell provider to track the movements and patterns of subjects, often uncovering valuable leads that were not evident before. Team members are experts in the interpretation of cellular data and provide support for investigations.
