|
General Description |
The DPSCS Division of Parole & Probation is rolling out a 5-day in-service program.
The 2025 In-Service program for DPP will provide training on the below topics and is required for all mandated employees: Social Workers, Agents, Monitors (DDM), Field Supervisor I (FSI), and Monitor Supervisor I (MSI).
- Agents, Social Workers and FSIs must attend the 5-day program for a total of 35 hours of in-service credits.
- DDM and MSI staff will receive days 3, 4 and 5 of the training for a total of 21 credit hours. Therefore, DDM and MSI personnel can only register for the weeks marked as DDMP. (January 21, February 18, May 27 at Chesapeake, June 16 at Hagerstown, October 14.)
- This course is NOT open to clerical staff.
Training Schedule:
Day 1 - Defensive Tactics: Training will provide non-custody staff with the confidence to initiate Defensive Tactics techniques in the event that staff are forced to protect themselves from physical harm.
Day 2 - Field & Agent Safety: Instruction will review safety policies and procedures for supervision activities.
Day 3 - CPR/First Aid: Students will receive an overview and practical of CPR and First Aid. Participation will require physical effort, including kneeling on the floor and pushing forcefully on the manikin's chest with both hands/arms.
Day 4 - Justice Reinvestment Act (JRA): The JRA training will provide a review of policies and procedures for assessments and Case Planning, Graduated Sanctions, Earned Compliance Credit, Collections and Accounting.
Day 5 - De-Escalation and Behavioral Health: The De-Escalation training will inform participants of the signs of escalation and provide techniques to verbally de-escalate conflicts. Recognizing Behavioral Health Conditions portion will provide students with the signs and symptoms of behavioral health disorders such as depression, substance abuse and anxiety disorders. Furthermore, the class will discuss the stigma and other barriers to treatment and support as well as review the Behavioral Health considerations for Older Adults. The course will also provide an overview of Suicide and Suicidal Ideation.
Important Notes:
Attendance is mandatory for each day of the course, so please ensure your schedule is clear of any discrepancies such as court appearances, meetings, assignments, child care, etc. that would keep you from fulfilling the requirements of the in-service program. The dress code for this program is Division of Parole & Probation level 2 attire. Jeans, sneakers or T-shirts are not acceptable. On the day of defensive tactics training, students are permitted to wear athletic attire (tee shirts and athletic pants) while still abiding by the Department's dress code (ADM.050.0029 Section 5, Item C). Shorts, tank tops and any clothing with holes or profanity is still prohibited.
Registration:
DPP staff can request enrollment in the 2025 In-Service program by submitting the Registration Request Form for 2025 In-Service. This form should not be used to request any other training enrollment; it's only for the 2025 in-service program for DPP staff. Regional Training Coordinator (RTCs) will review the request and enroll via the MDLE Portal. Students will receive an automated confirmation email once enrolled.
Students should contact their regional training coordinator in order to cancel or move from a confirmed date. It's highly encouraged to pick a new date at the same time so the RTC can move the registration, versus the student having to resubmit the registration request form. Students can always reference the public view calendar to see which program dates have available seating. All rosters lock within 3 business days of a course start date. Late cancellations and no-shows are still tracked by MPCTC personnel and attendance awareness reports sent to supervisors after multiple infractions.
2025 Dates:
Training location is the MD Public Safety Education & Training Center in Sykesville unless otherwise noted. Students will receive exact location details in the reminder email, sent to enrolled students approximately 3 weeks prior to the course start date. As noted previously, DDM and MSI staff can only register for the weeks marked as DDMP (January 21, February 18, May 27 at Chesapeake, June 16 at Hagerstown, October 14).
