General Description
The National Institute of Corrections Academy Division in partnership with Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services are pleased to offer The Learning and Performance Coach program for Correctional Agencies!

DESCRIPTION
Participants completing this blended training will be able to create and implement a coaching session following the 10-step Performance Coaching process and incorporate adult learning theory into development of coaching sessions. Key topics include:
- Overview of the Performance Coaching role.
- Using Developing A CurriculUM (DACUM)/Job Task Analysis to identify coaching topics.
- Developing Effective Performance Objectives.
- Instructional Theory Into Practice Model of performance coaching checklist development;
- Adult learning theory and how it applies to the coaching process.
- The Experiential Learning Cycle and how it relates to the coaching process.
- Developing two (2) performance coaching checklists.
- Preparing, rehearsing, delivering, and receiving feedback on two (2) performance coaching checklist; and
- Developing an individual performance coaching development plan to guide future coaching activities.

Participants will complete pre-session and inter-session activities that include signing a course commitment statement, self-assessment, and plan for improving coaching techniques, and reading and completing all designated assignments.

Virtual Instructor Led Training Dates

In-Person Training Dates
Public Safety Education and Training Center, 6852 4th Street, Sykesville, MD 21784
- February 11 and 12, 2025: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM EST


WHO SHOULD ATTEND
Attendees must be individuals who provide or wish to provide training and facilitation for an agency, Field Training Officer, Performance Coach, and/or individuals responsible for improving agency performance. Seating is limited and the host agency reserves the right to limit the number of seats per agency. While not mandatory, it is recommended that participants have previously attended a 40-hour basic train-the-trainer/instructor skill development course.


APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS
1. Interested participants should read this information in its entirety and ensure the instructional steps are followed in order to obtain a seat in this program. Submit a request through your agency’s training coordinator, in accordance with your agency’s established protocols. Training coordinators with access to the MPCTC MDLE portal should login to request enrollment. All students must attend this program under their agency’s authority and approval. Students will receive an automated email notification indicating the enrollment request was received and is pending approval. (DPSCS personnel should contact their institutional training coordinator; DPP staff their regional training coordinator. DPSCS personnel without an assigned training coordinator can submit a signed MPCTC Registration Form to begin the process.)

2. Once your training coordinator has submitted the enrollment request, the student should submit the Supplemental Enrollment Form. This form asks students to provide a written statement (no more than several paragraphs) delineating your ability and desire to coach, train and improve staff performance. It should also include how you believe your participation will assist your agency in improving agency performance. The student’s name will remain as pending until the supplemental form has been submitted and reviewed.

3. Once the enrollment request has been reviewed, the student and training coordinator will receive either an approval or denial email. Once the November 1st, 2024 registration deadline has passed, approved students will receive information on registering in the NIC learning system.


COST INFORMATION
NIC will provide the training at no cost. Participants are responsible for their own lodging, food, and travel expenses. Affordable dormitory-style lodging is available on the PSETC campus. Full details and guest services contact information is available on the Lodging Reservation Request Form. Area hotels can be found in Westminster, MD and Owings Mills, MD. The PSETC main academic building hosts a full service dining hall. Students can purchase breakfast and lunch on-site, or visit many of the surrounding area restaurants.

While the MDLE roster is open for applications, only 26 students will be accepted! Students will receive an acceptance or denial email after the November 1st deadline, once applications have been reviewed.
