DPSCS Implicit Bias Awareness (Front Line)

General Description
DPSCS Implicit Bias Awareness - Fair & Impartial Corrections (Front Line Staff)

Reserved for Front Line Staff to include Sergeants, Corporals, Agents, Monitors, Civilian/Non-uniformed staff and any other comparable ranks/titles who are in a non-supervisory role.

This training on Implicit Bias applies decades of research on human bias to the decisions that both Institutional and Community Correctional Professionals make every day. This is a course about how your mind works. There will be no finger pointing or blame; instead we will discuss how implicit biases can affect well-intentioned individuals outside their conscious awareness. During the class, we will discuss the negative consequences of letting your ‘hidden biases’ impact your perceptions and behavior and, importantly, you will learn the skills that you can implement to reduce and manage your biases. These skills will not keep you from doing the important functions of your job; instead these skills will enhance your ability to engage in that work and make decisions that are more effective and just. Because this class has been customized for DPSCS, we will also discuss with First Line Supervisors what they will need to do besides managing their own biases, to promote bias-free decisions within your agency.

Please note that each of the various program dates has an affiliated level of students for the session. Rank/title is a REQUIRED FIELD when enrolling. Students assigned to an institution must contact their institutional training coordinator to attend. This applies for any and all ranks assigned to an institution. ITCs can enroll by logging into training.mdle.net. For those individuals not assigned to an institution (i.e. Office of the Secretary), please submit the DPSCS Non-Institution Bias Registration Form to request enrollment.

This program is posted for DPSCS staff only. Other agencies are not permitted to attend at this time.

We are aware that courses filled up very quickly. Additional dates will be posted for the second half of 2024, and into 2025. Submitting your information on the Waitlist Form will ensure you're alerted when additional dates are confirmed, though notices will continue to be sent as classes are posted.
