DPSCS Leadership Summit (5-Day)

This 5-day Leadership Summit is for DPSCS personnel (Majors, Captains, and DPP Administrators, including those in acting capacities) and will focus on Leadership in Challenging Times and Team Building.

On Day 1, the featured speaker is Mr. Jack Enter, who will address Leadership Principles for Correctional Executives. Mr. Enter has been associated with the field of criminal justice and corrections since 1972. He has served as a correctional US Army Military Police Officer and was assigned to a military correctional facility earlier in his career. He served as an acting Warden at the Gwinnett County Correctional Facility as well as Captain and Chief Deputy at the Gwinnet County Sheriff’s Office outside of Atlanta. In this capacity, he was responsible for oversight of Personnel and Operational Management decisions at the jail. Jack Enter obtained his Ph.D. in 1984 and has served as a professor and administrator in the university setting. He also served as the Director of Georgia Information & Education for the Governor’s Criminal Justice Coordinating Council.

Days 2-4 will focus on DPSCS specifically, and include a variety of presenters who will review topics such as Human Resources, Critical Incidents in Corrections, Strategies for Dealing with Positive and Negative Performance, and many more. Dr. Valorie Sanders will organize team-building activities as well. Participants will have the opportunity to review case studies related to human resources and legal issues. Discussion will also center on union concerns and investigations. An administrator’s panel will also be made available for an interactive session with the participants to answer questions and share experiences of supervision in a correctional setting.

Day 5 is a Leadership Presentation on Resiliency & Trauma is presented by Dr. Christina Harnett, PhD and associate professor with Johns Hopkins School of Education. Christina Harnett is a licensed psychologist and associate professor (Clinical) in the Counseling and Human Services Program. In addition to teaching courses in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program, she teaches in the Master in Education in Health Professions Program, an inter-school educational initiative. She has developed several online courses within and outside of the counseling program. Her scholarship and training experience focus on stress management and resilience development in professional populations, as well as in promoting resilience in first responders to include military members, law enforcement professionals and teachers. She has presented to, or trained, these groups regionally, nationally and internationally. In addition, Harnett has given expert witness testimony at both state and federal court levels. Her focus on supporting the military post-9/11 led to her involvement in the Maryland National Guard’s Yellow Ribbon Program where she served for several years as part of their mental health team. She has been awarded medals for meritorious service from both the Maryland Department of the Military and the U.S. Army. Her publications are centered on deployment issues related to the National Guard and Reserves and their families.
